Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) trees have a lifespan of up to 100 years in their natural environment, the lower strata of tropical alluvial forests. Sustainability of global cocoa production is at stake due to the deterioration of soil fertility, high losses due to pests and diseases (P&D) and old tree stock. Producing cocoa in shaded, low input agroforestry systems offers a potential solution for achieving long-term productivity and sustainability. However, shade-tolerant cocoa clones are needed which are productive and resistant to P&D, as well as meeting the quality standards requested by the industry. In Bolivia, the cocoa mirid (Monalonion dissimulatum) and the novel disease Frosty Pod Rot (“Monilia” Moniliophthora roreri) are among the most... |

L. angustifolius genotypes susceptible to Fusarium root rot and wilt can be grown in new lupin land without disease symptoms, however, lupin root rot and wilt pathogens build up during repeated cropping of susceptible lupins in the same field. After four lupin crops symptoms of root rot and wilt began in an inhomogeneous pattern over the field, and after another three lupin crops susceptible lupins are destroyed before flowering homogeneously over the field and caused total crop failure. The dominating pathogens isolated from diseased lupins with root rot and wilt symptoms in this field are in descending order F. oxisporum, F. solani, F. culmorum, and F. avenaceum, the latter only being isolated from young autumn sown plants. A core collection of lupin... |

The key questions which will be addressed in this report are: • Which variety characteristics are important for organic farming and are they different from conventional farmers demand? • What is an “appropriate“ variety for organic farming? • Is the actual variety offer available to organic farmers satisfactory? Is it different per crops type and/or per geographic area? • How should variety trials be conducted in order to supply the information needed by organic operators? The main answers may be synthesized as follows: Characteristics of varieties to be used in organic farming are partly different from the ones requested in conventional farming. Main differences are related to yield stability, processing properties and root-system development; The... |

Organic farming systems, characterized by special attention to soil fertility, recycling techniques and low external inputs, gained increased significance in recent years. As a consequence, there is a growing demand for varieties adapted to organic and/or low input farming. The objectives of the present study were to (i) compare the testcross performance of segregating maize (Zea mays) populations under established organic (OF) and conventional farming (CF) systems, (ii) determine quantitative genetic parameters decisive for the selection response under OF vs CF conditions, and (iii) draw conclusions for breeding new varieties optimally adapted to OF. Testcross performance of four different material groups of preselected lines (90 lines per group) derived... |

Hybrid breeding utilizes the advantages characterizing F1 plants in a targeted manner: Vigour, uniformity, and a combination of all dominant traits of the parental lines. It gives breeders secure licences, as farmers can not save seed from hybrid varieties with a view to replanting. Regarding rye, the current advantages of hybrid varieties are primarily the higher yields but also improved resistances to lodging and sprouting. However, farmers can only benefit from higher yields if the limited market for organic rye in Switzerland can be expanded. The currently available hybrid rye varieties have higher susceptibility to leaf rust and ergot infections. The criticism of hybrid breeding and hybrid varieties concerns four areas: Firstly, the area of... |

While breeding for organic farming it is necessary to identify the most appropriate growing conditions in which to perform the selection process. Soil fertility, crop management, yield level and other factors may vary very much between each organic farm, and between organic farms and research institutions where the selection is usually performed. Since plant breeding requires considerable input of resources and the market for organic varieties is limited, it is essential to find the most appropriate selection conditions that will provide acceptable varieties for organic farms. Spring barley breeding lines selected from two cross combinations (Primus/Idumeja and Anni/Dziugiai) at two distinctive organic and two conventional locations were used in... |

The extremely diverse genetic variation in wheat Composite Cross Populations (CCP) represents a valuable source of breeding material. Such material could be selected as part of a participatory breeding programme with the potential advantage of selecting adaptation targeted for particular environments. For example, selections could be made aimed at producing lines that would thrive under the wide range of management practices conducted as part of organic and low input farming systems. Ears were selected from a CCP mixed stand under organic field conditions in the UK and Hungary. Selected lines were multiplied as single ear rows and 1m2 plots. The best performing five lines from the two selection sites were trialled in Suffolk, UK, in replicated plots... |

This is the final report of Defra project OF0166. There is a longer summary at the start of the attached main report. For many farmers and growers, a move to organic production presents major challenges. Among these, the issues regarding the use of organic seeds could yet be a stumbling block, as growers and the seed trade have reservations about using and producing them for four major reasons: 1) The availability of a wide range of organic varieties appropriate to all year round crop scheduling, and differing production techniques and markets 2) The impact of derogation on managing the supply and demand for organic seed 3) The technical issues of organic seed production 4) Maintaining high standards of seed quality, hygiene and vigour. Three... |

Crop mixtures consisting of cereals and legumes have proven as a well-adapted arrangement due to their complementarity towards important resources, especially nitrogen. Crop mixtures combine high yield performance and yield stability. They can contribute to a diversified cropping landscape and adaptation to climate change. The search for alternatives to protein imports from overseas and investments in post-harvest separation technologies are currently fostering their adoption by farmers in Western-Europe, especially under organic and lowinput farming conditions. However, screening and breeding for mixed cropping has hardly been explored for arable crops. Thus, the objective was to develop novel breeding strategies and tools specifically for mixed cropping... |
